Ambitious Effort Under Way To Recycle Every Roof Strip In Partnership With E.L. Harvey & Sons.
Sunday, April 22 was Earth Day 2012, and O’LYN Contractors, Inc. marked this year’s event by announcing ambitious goals to significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Through its environmentally friendly roofing programs, O’LYN hopes to set a standard for the entire construction industry to reduce, reuse, and recycle. A focus on greener construction practices would result in energy savings and reduced dependence on foreign oil, creating a better world for future generations.
Nearly 10 million tons of recyclable shingles are removed from the roofs of U.S. homes and buildings annually. Unfortunately, most of these used shingles currently end up in landfills. O’LYN is committed to helping the environment through our asphalt shingle recycling program. “Our goal is to recycle 100% of our asphalt shingle tear off into road base, keeping it out of landfills,” says Todd Mellor, Production Manager at O’LYN. O’LYN Contractors, Inc., an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, is the only contractor pledged to recycle in the Boston area.
Beginning in Spring 2012, O’LYN is teaming up withE.L. Harvey & Sons, a state-of-the-art recycling facility in Westborough, MA that sorts and recycles every possible piece of construction debris. Although recycling asphalt shingles is not mandatory in the state of Massachusetts, E.L. Harvey & Sons chooses to recycle the shingles they receive. These shingles are inspected, sorted and then processed into materials that are used in asphalt-based products. Some examples are: private driveways, parking lots, pothole and crack-filler, and new roofing material. A running tally of how many tons of shingles are recycled will be kept and displayed on the O’LYN homepage. Customers and anyone else interested can check thewebsite in coming months to see the progress achieved.
