Benefits of Various Gutter and Downspout Materials
Gutters are available in a variety of styles and colors, each with their own aesthetic appeal and benefits. Contact O’LYN Roofing to today for more information about the gutters we install and which style is the best fit for your home!
K-style gutters are named for their vague resemblance to the letter K. Also known as “ogee” gutters, meaning “double-curve” they are available in a variety of sizes, but the two most common sizes are five-inch and six-inch versions. Generally constructed from aluminum, K-gutters can also be constructed with vinyl, copper and steel, and more. K-gutters often the benefit of being able to hold more water than standard rounded gutters and are also less likely to bend under heavy weight, but their strange shape can also be hard to clean.
Half-round gutters, recognized for their vintage appeal, are generally found on turn-of-the-century homes, although homeowners often still use them to add a bit of classic style to a home’s exterior. Half-round gutters come in a variety of materials, including steel, copper, plastic, and can also be seamless. Half-round gutters, offer a few advantages over their K-style contemporaries, including rounded design, which cuts down on corrosion and clogs and also makes cleaning the gutters much easier than K-style gutters. On the other hand, rounded gutters aren’t able to hold as much water, which can cause the gutters to overflow more easily, especially in high-precipitation areas.
Seamless Aluminum Gutters
Seamless gutters are economical, effective, and easy to install, making them a top choice for contractors and homeowners alike. Seamless gutters are custom-fit to the exact length needed for your home, making them relatively easy to install. They also have no joints for water or debris to get in, or drip through. Aluminum gutters have a couple of distinct advantages – they won’t rust or crack, like steel or vinyl would. They are an enduring, economical solution that can be installed quite easily.
Copper gutters are a wonderful choice if you want to add style and artistry to your home. Copper gutters are durable and while they will patina, they will never rust or need to be repainted. Copper gutters need to be installed by a professional contractor because the system needs to be soldered in order to be water tight. Copper gutters do offer a couple of disadvantages compared to other gutter materials. They are more expensive, and harder to install, meaning while your home will have a beautiful exterior accent, you will be paying a premium price.
Additionally, if you’re installing new gutters, you may be interested in installing gutter guards. While gutter guards make the job a tad bit more expensive, they eliminate the need to clean your clogged, leaking gutters, and will help prevent water damage to your home. Besides, if you’re putting money into your home to install a new gutter system, why not add guards and eliminate the risk of them becoming filled with rotting leaves and debris.
