It’s Earth Day All Year at O’LYN Contractors

As part of celebration of Earth Day 2012, we’ve chosen this week to announce our shingle recycling partnership with E.L. Harvey & Sons and Owens Corning. Our ultimate goal is to keep 100% of our construction debris out of landfills. You can learn more about our shingle recycling partnership from our press release.
At O’LYN Contractors we are acutely aware of the leadership role we play in protecting our environment. Construction is not typically an environmentally progressive industry, but we want that to change. By recycling shingles and construction debris, we are able to reduce our carbon footprint and dependence on foreign oil.
But we don’t stop there. We go out of our way to be as environmentally friendly as possible in every aspect of our business. For instance, our office is located in an area without available commercial recycling services. So we  collect all the recyclable materials generated in our office, pack them into an employee’s personal vehicle, and then drive them to a recycling center.
And as we posted last week, we just entered two new fuel efficient Ford Transit Connects into our fleet. Each Transit Connect gets 22/27 mpg…not too bad for a large transport vehicle.
We would also like to thank other local businesses for doing their parts. One of our employees recently chose to purchase a new car from Planet Subaru in Hanover, MA in part due to the dealership’s proven commitment to the environment. Planet Subaru’s showroom is entirely powered by a 78,540-watt solar energy system. This, in addition to their other environmental efforts, won them the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Small Business Award.
In fact, Subaru itself is also making an effort. Every Subaru is built in a zero landfill plant. Subaru’s US plant was the first one in the country to achieve zero landfill status and it’s the only automotive assembly plant to be designated a Backyard Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. As Earth Day week draws to a close, we’d like to take the opportunity to remind everyone that taking care of the earth is a yearlong and lifelong responsibility. One we hope to continually improve on in our professional AND our personal lives, and hope you do too.
