Benefits of Various Gutter and Downspout Materials

Gutters are available in a variety of styles and colors, each with its own aesthetic appeal and benefits. Contact O’LYN Roofing today for more information about the gutters we install and which style is the best fit for your home!

K-Style Gutters

K-style gutters derive their name from their vague resemblance to the letter k. They also go by the name of “ogee” gutters and are available in a variety of sizes. The two most common sizes are five-inch and six-inch versions. K-gutters often have the benefit of being able to hold more water than standard rounded gutters. They are also less likely to bend under heavy weight, but their strange shape can also be hard to clean.

Half-Round Gutters

Found on turn-of-the-century homes, half-round gutters are recognized for their vintage appeal. Homeowners often still use them to add a bit of classic style to a home’s exterior. Half-round gutters come in a variety of materials, including steel, copper, and plastic, and can also be seamless. They also offer a few advantages over their K-style contemporaries. Their rounded design cuts down on corrosion and clogs. Which also makes cleaning the gutters much easier than K-style gutters. On the other hand, rounded gutters aren’t able to hold as much water, which can cause the gutters to overflow more easily, especially in high-precipitation areas.

Seamless Aluminum Gutters

Seamless gutters are economical, effective, and easy to install, making them a top choice for contractors and homeowners alike. And seamless gutters are custom-fit to the exact length needed for your home, making them relatively easy to install. They also have no joints for water or debris to get in or drip through. Aluminum gutters have a couple of distinct advantages – they won’t rust or crack like steel or vinyl would.

Copper Gutters

Copper gutters are a wonderful choice if you want to add style and artistry to your home. Copper gutters are durable, and while they will patina, they will never rust or need to be repainted. However, copper gutters need to be installed by a professional contractor because the system needs to be soldered in order to be watertight. But copper gutters do offer a couple of disadvantages compared to other gutter materials. They are more expensive and harder to install, meaning while your home will have a beautiful exterior accent, you will be paying a premium price.

Additionally, if you’re installing new gutters, you may be interested in installing gutter guards. While gutter guards make the job a tad bit more expensive, they eliminate the need to clean your clogged, leaking gutters and will help prevent water damage to your home. Besides, if you’re putting money into your home to install a new gutter system, why not add guards and eliminate the risk of them becoming filled with rotting leaves and debris.
